What are some of the interior design and decor trends you’re likely to see – and possibly incorporate into your home or investment apartment – in 2020? We’ve trawled through design blogs and websites to bring you this easy-to-implement selection.
1. A touch of green
Greening indoor spaces, through house plants and indoor gardens, has been a trend for some time – and happily, it’s set to continue in 2020. And there may even be a few new favourites to add to your list: According to Apartment Therapy, the low-maintenance Ficus Audrey is likely to be the plant of choice in 2020, while Good Housekeeping recommends adding an olive tree to your collection. So, head to your local nursery and pick up some plants and gorgeous pots to add a splash of fresh green to your home.
2. The natural look
If you’re looking to add one or two new pieces to your home, consider furniture that incorporates cane or rattan. According to Dwell, “Natural, woven materials in the form of rattan furniture, seagrass pendant lights, and jute rugs have taken the interior design world by storm, but all trends have an evolution.” They predict that the next stage of this trend will be cane detailing on modern furniture.
3. Old meets new
One of the decor trends listed by Elle Décor is “layering old and new”. The lovely thing about this trend is that it enables you to add plenty of personality to your space, as family heirlooms and well-loved pieces take pride of place alongside newer and more modern additions.
4. Sophisticated colours
It seems that grey has had its day (for now) and that colour is on its way back. Pantone’s Colour of the Year for 2020 is Classic Blue, Dwell has muted dusty green shades on their trend list, and according to Apartment Therapy, soft, warm beige shades with pink undertones are a great wall colour choice.
5. Comfortable curves
Another trend that features on plenty of 2020 lists is the move to curvy, rounded and super-comfy) couches and chairs. Perfect for lounging around on a lazy afternoon, these somewhat nostalgic pieces will add softness and relaxed style to your space.
